this week's FREE BEADS
thursday afternoon
Jenn and I have decided to hold a drawing for our little questionnaire located just below this entry. Everyone will be entered to win one of two mini-bead sets. If you're a tomboy, you'll be entered to win tomboy-inspired beads made by me. If you're a princess, you'll be entered to win princess-inspired beads made by Jenn. I'll keep the drawing open for another week until everyone has had a chance to send in their response.
This drawing is in addition to the weekly FREE BEAD drawing I hold every Friday. When you send in your response, your name will be entered an additional 2 times for that week's FREE BEAD drawing.
FREE BEAD pictures coming up later tonight.
wednesday morning
Nobody seems to have any good movies for me???? I must be the only gal in the US that likes scary movies. Jenn and I have been discussing this subject at great length via email this week. She prefers chick flicks while I prefer suspense-thrillers. Jenn seems to think it has something to do with our upbringing. I was a tomboy. I played with Barbies and such, but I always was involved in sports. I played football with the neighborhood boys and was always in some sport at school. Jenn said she pretended that she was a princess and that her prince would come take her away to his castle. I can't ever imagine a time in my life when I played that way. Barbie was as close as I got.
So Jenn and I have decided there must be a link to how you played as a child that relates to the type of movies you like. Now when I say I like scary movies - I like suspense - I don't like slasher films. And although I've seen a couple of Saw movies, I quit after the second one. I'm not entertained watching someone's arm get chopped off. I'm not into the bloody, Texas Chainsaw Massacre-type movies. My type is more like Signs, The Village, Panic Room, Flight Plan...although not all great movies, they were thoroughly entertaining to me.
So anyway, I'd love to here from you guys about what you think of our theory. If you were a princess or tomboy and does that relate to what kind of movies you like? If you were a tomboy and you prefer chick flicks then our theory is shattered. Yet I'd like to think there are those of you out there that like suspese-thrillers that were princesses when you were younger!
So I'm sending a shout out to all you princesses! I'm taking a vote. All you have to do is click on the link that best describes your taste. If you do, I'll add your name 2 times to this week's FREE BEADS AND maybe hold an additional drawing for something else...to be determined. What do you have to lose? Just click and send. You don't need to add a response unless you want to.
If you were a princess but prefer suspense-thrillers
If you were a princess but prefer chick flicks
If you were a tomboy but prefer chick-flicks
If you were a tomboy but prefer suspense thrillers

Congratulations Carlene! Thanks for the votes!
Hope everyone had a nice Mother's Day!!
We had our Goddaughter spend the night Friday night. How fun to have a girl in the house for a change. She's SO cute! 4 year's old with the vocabulary of a 20 year old. The stuff that comes out of her mouth is too funny. We kept her all day Saturday until we passed her off to her mom around 5pm. I was tired on Sunday! I forgot what it's like to run around and keep a 4 year old entertained. Painting fingernails, baking and decorating cookies, swimming, crafting, etc, etc, etc. Whew! We had fun though.
Thanks for the emails regarding custom orders. I got some great feedback. A few ideas that I have not thought of which brought me to my latest decision. I'm going to put a link on my site for custom orders. I've been getting lots of requests lately and although I can't take on too many, I feel like I'm at a point where I can take on more than I used to. So I'd like to have a page that explains pricing and how I handle custom requests. I think I'll work on that tonight and try to get it up and running within the next couple of days. So be on the lookout for that.
I can't believe there's less than a month left of school! Patrick gets out on June 6th. He and I are heading home to see my family in Dallas the following week. I'm looking forward to that. My mom has done some remodeling in her house and says she needs my help with a few touches. It'll be fun to run around with her getting that stuff done. It was a year ago March that she had her last chemo session. She's doing well in that department but has had the lasting effects of neuropathy in her feet so she can't get around as fast as she used to. But as she puts it, she's still here on this earth to "complain" about it so that's good!
On a random sidenote, have any of y'all seen any good movies lately? I'd love for y'all to drop me a line and give me suggestions. I like all genres but especially scary movies. JP doesn't like scary movies - more action and comedy - so when he's on the road I like to rent movies I know he wouldn't watch. I like thrillers, scary and action flicks. My 2 younger brothers and I are always on the hunt for entertaining movies. Since the 3 of us especially like scary movies, that's a hard genre to keep us satisfied. One of my favorites is Jeepers Creepers. It's literally as the title states - Creepy! It's rare a movie really scares me. Very little freaks me out. So if you guys have any good ones, please send them my way. I'll warn you though - I'm not a chick flick kind of gal. I don't care much for romantic comedies and the like. I'll watch them if they're on HBO or something, but I wouldn't go out and rent them. I find them disappointing - especially the endings. I just watched Catch and Release with Jennifer Garner on HBO one night - what a snoozer! So predictable. OK. The dryer is beeping...I must tend to my house!
Stay tuned.

~*~*~ Meagan from Iowa ~*~*~
Congratulations Meagan! Thank you for the votes!
I picked her name back on Saturday but I just got around to updating! I just got back from my Design Stars group. We're getting some product ready for another craft show. We've had lots of gals asking for them around town and we haven't a thing to sell for months. So we've been cranking them out and are ready to get out there. It's taken some time away from beading but I enjoy that creative outlet too.
I'm fulfilling a couple of bead custom orders this week for some gals that have been patiently awaiting their sets - for months. Naturally they knew it would take a while but I still feel bad. I don't have much on the calendar so I hope to get lots of beading time in during the next few weeks. I had a suggestion last week from a gal that bought some beads from me that I'd like to run past y'all. Would you guys be interested in me updating bead specials and taking orders on them?
So for instance, I'll post a picture of Pinky Pops (for example) and show 3 in stock but actually only have 1 in stock and make the other 2 to order once someone buys them? Kind of a make'em as I sell'em but require money up front? I'm not too fond of the idea because it would create an "assembly line" type of environment for me - yet it would allow people a chance at a set they've been eyeing. I especially don't like taking the money up front but then it would probably totally motivate me to get them made quick.
My other option is not announcing when I'll have new bead specials for sale and just posting them when I have them. It's not as if I've got lines of people wanting my beads but I do find that it can matter what time of the day or week I post as to whether someone hits me the right time for a set of beads. And also because I never post that many sets OR that often. So I'd like any feedback y'all have on this or what you'd like to see.
I do know that many of you don't like eBay or etsy as a vehicle to sell beads - especially eBay. Yet I ted to like them both because it's good advertising and brings new people to my site which I like to do. Yet I haven't sold on eBay in way over a year or more. I like etsy because it's a fixed price and it allows me to be a part of my favorite site online. I can get lost on that site for hours. The picture you see to side is my most recent purchase. I LOVE this! What a creative way to recycle an otherwise garbage-bound item. I love unusual rings so this is right up my alley. You can find the gal's etsy shop here.
Well whatever you think about my ideas, I always like to hear from you guys so drop me a note with your thoughts when you get a chance. Not much else going on this week. Just keeping busy with the usual stuff. Have a good one!
this week's FREE BEADS
thursday morning
Today is new bead specials day! I've got most of my beads strung and ready to be photog'ed. I've got a busy day today in addition to beads and I'm trying to find a good time to update. I have to leave for baseball around 4pm and have bunko afterward. I've had a few of you emailing wanting to know when I'd be posting new bead specials, realizing the middle of the day isn't convenient for everyone. So I think I'll update tonight when I return from bunko. Hopefully I'll remember how after a couple of glasses of wine. So it'll be much later in the day. I figure if the time difference doesn't allow you to catch them tonight, you'll get them first thing tomorrow morning. Stay tuned!

sunday.april 27.2008
Does anything seem strange to you? Maybe you already noticed. I used the actual date today instead of just the day of the week. That's because this day will go down in the history books for me.
Something happened to me; something that will forever change me. I can never look at myself in the mirror the same way again after what I did today. In my 41 years, 8 months and 19 days I have lived with something since the day I was born. Today that changed. Are you ready???? Here it is.....drum roll please............I colored my hair. Yep, that's it. I colored my hair for the very first time in my life today. This is MONUMENTAL news my dear friends. I discovered as you age, your hair ages too. I've never liked the color gray, especially on my head. And I had a lot of it. It was getting so bad that I was going to have to change the hair color on my driver's license. So I decided I'd try my hand at this coloring thing. And I must say, I like the results but NOT the process. How much messier can it be?? Yet as low maintenance as I am, there ain't no way I'm paying $100 for someone else to do it for me. So Pecan Golden Brown has made me a new woman.
So I'm back to being a "true" brunette. I missed a few gray strands here and there but that's because I was freaking out and washed my hair before I was supposed to. Now that I'm a pro, I'll know what to do next time. So that's my big news. May not seem that big of a deal, especially when I read girls as young as 11 years old are getting their hair colored. But for me it's huge. I'm so cheap that if I could find a way to cut my own hair, I would. So this is a BIG step for me. I'm a big girl now!
You know. I'm kind of a little sad about it actually. I really wanted to see how long I could go before I HAD to color my hair. I was on a pretty good streak. It was bad enough that I had to remember to get my haircut. Now I'll have to forever worry every 6 weeks or so that I have to color my hair. UGH! My sister will be proud though. She's always been one to change the shade of her hair. She'll appreciate me growing up a bit.
Well I have free bead picture but I can't update. I'm switching over all my files and programs to my new laptop and it's causing some problems. My photo program I use to edit my photos is on my new computer but it's not working. So unless I can find a way to edit them on my old computer - we're in BIG trouble.
Hence, I've changed my bead specials update to Thursday. I was planning on taking pictures tomorrow and trying to update new bead specials by evening but with this new photo trouble that'll have to change. I've sat here for 30 minutes and I can't get it to work. Heck, I can't even get photos to save. I have to drag and drop them into files. Vista is the operating system on my new computer and I have no familiarity with it at all. I'm really trying to use my new laptop for everything but these little hiccups are making that difficult. So stay tuned for a bead specials update.
OH..and free beads winners for this week AND last.
friday night
Hey ladies. I've been busy making beads this week among other things and completely forgot to update my site! I have yet to announce LAST week's free beads winner and post this week's new free beads. Sorry about that. Patrick has a baseball game tomorrow which tends to consume much of the day. But I promise I'll try to get it all updated by Sunday.
I've had many of you asking if Monday is looking good for updating. The answer is yes and no. I have beads but want to make a few more sets. Right now I have about 6 sets done with one in the works. I have about 5 more sets I'd like to make so I'd prefer to push back that Monday date to later in the week so I can get it all done. So please be patient with me while I try to get that all done.
I'm currently typing away on my new laptop. It's going to completely replace my desktop. JP has been working on getting all my pictures and files transferred over from my old computer. It's weird to think that I can do everything from the comfort of my couch. I LOVE the idea of it. What a blob I am!
OK. So I'll be back by the end of the weekend with free beads to giveaway! Stay tuned.
wednesday night
I can't believe tomorrow is Thursday! And I never updated last week's FREE BEADS winner! It seems my updates as of late are always making excuses for my lack of updates AND my lack of beads.
Today I had a date with my Design Stars. We've had quite a few people around town asking about our goods and we have had very little stock on hand. We're trying to plan a show in June so we need to get busy. We were very busy today churning out product. Needless to say, no beads were made. Yet I plan on making beads tomorrow. I have a dentist appointment then it's in front of the torch the rest of the day. I have Monday has my current posting day. I hope I can stay with that date. Worst case, I'll push it back a couple of days. But I'm going to shoot for Monday for now.
Let's see, what else. We had a great time at the wedding in Cleveland. Yet it wasn't the most pleasant of flights. Our flight out of San Jose was delayed by 2 hours which caused us to miss our connection in Chicago. Of course we were booked on the last flight out that night to Cleveland so we had to wait until the next morning's flight. Well they didn't pull our bags - they just transfer them to the next flight out. And because that was the next day, we had to check into a hotel with the clothes on our back. Oh, the gate agent was nice enough (insert wink here) to give me the obligatory travel pack with a razor from the 70's, a tooth brush with bristles that belong on a steel brush and a comb that would make Barbie cry. It was pretty pathetic. I NEVER carry my bags - especially make-up. So I didn't have a thing - just some lipstick in my purse. Which I found out the next morning makes a decent blush for your cheeks in a pinch. I looked pretty harry the next day but what are you gonna' do.
That following morning was Patrick's birthday. I was bummed that we had to travel on his birthday instead of playing as we had intended. We pretty much got in town just in time to shower, grab a quick lunch at Dave and Busters (Patrick's FAVORITE place) and then take off to the Cleveland Indians game. I had a birthday greeting for him posted on their scoreboard. I got a picture of it so I'll post it at some point this weekend. He was so surprised. It was well worth it.
Well that's enough chatter. I'm heading off to bed. Stay tuned.
tuesday afternoon
My computer just came back up after a day. I lost connection yesterday just after noon so I'm way backed up. I'll be doing the drawing for last week's FREE BEADS so stay tuned for that. Off to baseball.

See - I promised I'd update bead pictures AND last week's winner before I left town. There's a bit of a shadow on these pictures because I took them just as the sun was about to go down past the roof tops in the neighborhood. But I got it done. Now I'm scrambling to pack, pick the house up, do some laundry, etc, etc, etc before I leave town. I can't stand to leave the house messy. My brother will be here yet I can't count on him to pick up my mess.
I got a few bead sets done. Yet I have a few more to make. I'd like to update my site with around 8-10 sets when I update so you can have something to choose from. So I'll probably spend some time next week finishing up a few sets so my bead specials page will be stacked. I had a few of you that thought you missed them already. I didn't realize I posted April 14th as my update - I must have done that in my sleep! I guess you figured out that wasn't going to happen. I promise I have beads! I WILL update! Stay tuned.
sunday afternoon
Hey gals! Still no beads. I just haven't had that much time on the torch this week. I don't know what I've been doing all this time but I'm doing something! I had hope to find time yesterday, but Patrick is in a new baseball league that requires the teams to play games away from town. Although it's not far away, I can't just hop on back home before baseball starts to get a few things done. Instead we have to sit around for an hour during warm-ups. VERY boring. We left the house yesterday at 10:45 and didn't return until around 4pm. It was almost a 3 hour game and they bead them in the 5th inning with the 10 run rule. Can you imagine how long it would have been had they not?? I'm not liking this "big boy" baseball. The spikes alone make me nervous with all that sliding!
It was my dear husband's birthday yesterday. I usually put a picture up for family members' birthdays but I'm on a new computer (which, by the way, I LOVE) and I have no pictures on this yet. We got home, opened gifts, went to dinner and then on to a friend's surprise birthday party for the rest of the evening. I had barely any time to shower yesterday!
This week is going to be tight. I have a few bead specials ready but I'm afraid to say it's going to have to wait until I return from our trip. We leave Wednesday morning and the next 2 days I'll be busy getting ready for that. Yet I promise to have free beads from last week (along with a winner) and this coming week's free bead pictures up before I leave.
The weather has been great here. I actually had to turn on the air conditioner yesterday! Our pool is in the mid-70's so Patrick jumped in after his game. I can't believe this summer-like weather. I got a bit of sun just sitting at Patrick's game. I'm looking forward to getting rid of my pastey-white skin.
I'm cleaning house today and then making beads. My plan is to have all my sets done before I leave town, then update my site the early part of next week with new bead sets. Stay tuned!
thursday night
This week just kind of got away from me. I can't believe tomorrow is already Friday! Don't quite have those free beads ready for show and tell just yet. BUT, I have been making beads that I hope to have ready for sale next week. We're heading to a wedding next weekend so my plan is update before then.
Free bead pictures up over the weekend.
monday night
GO JAYHAWKS!!
Patrick's party went well. No big issues to report. They were all well-mannered and ate well. A couple of them slept (including my son) but not many. One mom told me today that her son fell asleep in the car on the way home from our house. He got out of the car and slept until 8pm, woke up and ate, then went back to sleep at 9pm and slept through the night. Isn't that amazing?? He definitely got caught up on his sleep!
Anyway, I'm glad that's over. I actually cleaned my work station and started on beads today for my site. My plan is to upload new bead sets a week from today. Stay tuned!

Wish me luck today. I'm embarking on a VERY brave journey. We're celebrating Patrick's 13th birthday today with his friends. His birthday isn't until the 17th, but we'll be out of town that weekend and this seems to be the best weekend to get a group of boys together before baseball games start next week.
We're taking 10 boys to paintball then back to our house for swimming, a BBQ and a sleepover. Yes, a sleepover. I'm starting to rethink this idea. But it's been 4 years (I think) since we've given Patrick a big birthday party. So we felt guilted into doing something...and boy are we doing it. It's a good group of boys so it should be fine. They're just so BIG! Many of them are already 13 and taller than me! Well luckily it's a nice day so I hope they do swim and hang outside. If you don't hear from me...you'll know I didn't survive.

Sorry I never got pictures uploaded before today. This week was Patrick's Spring Break so I wanted to play a bit. Patrick and I did a crazy thing and went skiing to Dodge Ridge which is 3 hours from here. That in itself isn't so crazy, but the fact that we did it in one day is. Yes, I drove 3 hours..went skiing for almost 3 hours and drove 3 hours home in one day. Crazy! It actually wasn't as bad as I thought. It's not all highway driving so the scenery changes so much that we stayed entertained. Patrick slept almost half way home yet I was in control of the radio so it wasn't all bad.
I'm just about done with one of my custom orders. I've got others but I can sprinkle them in with regular beads that I'd like to make for my site. I should be done by early next week then I'm dedicating all torch time to bead specials. Off to shower and have dinner. JP has a friend in town and we're going to The Inn which we rarely go so I'm especially excited! So good! Have a great weekend!
tuesday night
Had a great time in LA seeing my brother and his wife for Easter. Got home late last night and have been running all day today. School stuff. Had an emergency parent meeting of which I'm on the board so that consumed my day.
It's Patrick's spring break this week so we're going to try and go skiing Thursday and Friday. I don't think that will lend itself to much bead making this week so those bead specials I may have eluded to will have to happen later next week. Hopefully you're on break this week too so beads is the farthest thing from your mind.
I'll leave you with a video posted on Corina's website. She's in Italy right now and took the the video with her camera. In this video, they're melting a large blob of glass and pulling it to make the rods of glass I use to make beads. They make one long rod about the diameter of a pencil and then cut them into smaller lengths that I use to make beads. Very cool.
If that link doesn't work, just go to Corina's page and check out her blog about her trip here.

I'll be busy beading all day, but for a custom order I'm afraid. I'm hoping to start on a few sets for my specials page later in the week. My hope is to update a few new sets the latter part of next week.
In the meantime, Rebecca chose the black, pink and white set for her FREE BEADS and Kathy said she was happy with either one so she's receiving the brights set. Everyone is happy and I didn't have to do a thing. Lovin' that. Stay tuned for this week's FREE BEADS tomorrow. Yes, I'm going to try HARD to get pictures posted tomorrow. Ciao.

Well I'm only a half liar. I did pick last week's AND this week's FREE BEADS winner AND I have FREE BEADS pictures...BUT I'm not announcing what they've won just yet. I made two sets of beads. And since I made them at the same time, I didn't designate them to a particular friday. So I'm going to let each winner pick the set they like best. My hope is that they each pick an opposite set so that way they both end up happy. Yet if they pick the same set, then I'm going to draw names and decide for them.

tuesday afternoon
Well FREE BEAD Monday came a went. Now here I sit on Tuesday afternoon with no beads on my desk to take pictures of OR giveaway. I promise I sat down yesterday afternoon to make beads. I got everything ready to go and reached for a mandrel....not one dipped mandrel ready for use.
So I had to shut down production and dip some mandrels. By the time I did that, I received a phone call, then the laundry needed to be switched, then Patrick needed to get to baseball practice THEN of course it was time to start dinner! UGH! Today isn't any better. I may be holding 2 FREE BEAD drawings on Friday. The part that really ticks me off is that I really need to bead! I've got bead deadlines and the days are fast-approaching. Tomorrow FOR SURE I'll be sitting at the torch all day. Yet I'm sure I'm down to my last drop of gas and I won't find that out until I sit down and turn on my torch. That'll surely delay my creativity. It's like the creative gods are working against me!
I just hope when I finally do sit down I can remember how to make a bead!
saturday afternoon
Hope you guys are enjoying your weekend. In case you haven't noticed, I not only didn't announce a winner yesterday, I didn't even post a picture of what that unannounced winner won! You see, it's because I don't have any free beads to take a picture of. So instead of FREE BEAD friday, it's going to be FREE BEAD monday. I'll post a picture of the beads and announce the winner then.
It's a gorgeous day here in Northern Cali. I was out in my tank top, shorts and flip flops doing some spring cleaning in the backyard. All of our backyard furniture has been packed away undercover from all the rain. We're supposed to have nice weather all week so I swept, shop-vac'd, 409'd and pulled weeds in the backyard. I was so in the mood. Hoping that my summer furniture will keep the sun around a bit longer. Now that's it's all nice and clean out back, I want to go sit in my chair with a nice cold beer and grill out. Which I think is what we're going to do. Sorry to those of you that just got hit with snow. I'll try and send some sunshine your way.
I've been getting requests for a date on new bead specials. I'm not sure when that will be. I've got a few custom orders I have to tend to. I'll probably work on those the first part of the week then work on bead specials over the weekend and through the following week. If you have suggestions, go ahead and send'em over. Give me some inspiration.
Have a great weekend!
tuesday afternoon
You'd think I'd be coming here to update you on some fresh bead news. Well I ain't got a bit of that. In fact, I haven't beaded at all this week and don't see that I can until later in the week. I'm just busy doing nothing. Well something AND nothing. Today I started volunteering again. I know, I know - I said wouldn't do that the rest of this year. But it's not for the school, instead for the church. It's lent for us Catholics so I have to do something good for my soul! Plus I'm driving for a field trip tomorrow and busy Thursday so Friday will be the earliest day I can sit down at the torch.
Now back to the reason I logged on. I HAD to share this with you. I rarely laugh out loud at stuff but this one got me. My friend from Texas emailed this to me and I HAD to post it here. Hope it makes you smile.

~*~*~ Jan from Texas ~*~*~
Congratulations Jan! Thanks for the votes gals!
Well I felt my age this week. I hadn't worked out at the gym in a while due to being sick back-to-back. Then we went skiing. So I show up bright and early Monday morning ready to get in shape. The treadmills were all occupied yet the stair stepper had just opened. I like the stair stepper and thought I'd just do that. Well the hot bod that just stepped off that had it on a very challenging setting. I couldn't get it off! I punched buttons, banged on it, spit on it - the works. Then I figured it wouldn't hurt me to push myself a bit. Heck. Maybe I'd step off with as hot of a bod as the previous chick.
Well I paid for that mistake. I woke up Tuesday and couldn't move. It wasn't what you would think - my legs, butt or calfs - that I can handle. The pain was all concentrated at my lower back bone - just above the cheeks. OH MY GOSH! I was taking 3 advil every 4 hours and it didn't do a thing. NOT A THING! I was pretty well laid up for 2 days. I finally added an extra Advil and found a bit of relief with that. It was awful! I was pretty good yesterday so I quit taking the Advil by the afternoon. I'm paying for that mistake this morning. The pain came back. It's not as intense yet I'm back to walking like I'm 9 months preganant. And although I may look like I'm 9 months preganant, I'm not. So I'm back on my cocktail of drugs.
The worst part is I have to sit on wooden bleachers all afternoon. Patrick's basketball team made it to the next level of play-offs and he could potentially play 2 games today. I may dig out a pool ring and sit on that. That'll get me a few stares I'm sure. Well as long as I have my little orange pills of relief I should be OK.
No new beads just yet. I hope to start on some stuff this next week. Stay tuned! Have a GREAT weekend! OH.. and I wanted to share this with you. My friend forwarded it to me and thought you may too. I don't know if all of this is exactly how it happened, but it's still a fun read.
The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s:
Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.
Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying: "it's raining cats and dogs."
There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.
The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, Dirt poor. The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway. Hence the saying a thresh hold.
In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old..
Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, bring home the bacon. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat.
Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.
Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.
Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.
England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell, or was considered a "dead ringer."
And that's the truth. Now, whoever said History was boring!!!

Well as you can see we're back! We had a great time. Wouldn't you know it...we ran into some people we knew staying at the same hotel! What a small world! Well it turns out at they knew 2 other families that were skiing in Tahoe as well. So we ended up having dinner 2 nights with that group of families. What a nice bonus! Kids all go to the same school and everything - too funny! We had so much fun. We played Rummikub both nights and had a lot of laughs.
It was sunny the day we arrived but snowed horribly the 2 days we skied. Patrick and JP took snowboard lessons on Thursday. Patrick loved it and took lessons again on Friday. JP did OK but said it's too much work. So he traded in his board for
